This holiday season, hope will shine brightly at Phoebe Cancer Center in Albany, Phoebe Worth Medical Center and Phoebe Sumter Medical Center as each campus pays tribute to local cancer patients and their families with their own special Lights of Love tree. Thousands of lights will be lit in honor and memory of loved ones, and donations to the beloved holiday events will benefit oncology patients receiving treatment at both locations.

Lights of Love at Phoebe

Since its inception more than 40 years ago, Lights of Love donations have surpassed the $1 million mark, providing special services and amenities to cancer patients and their families right here in our own communities.

Lights of Love Firsts:

• Lights of Love in 1983 was the first public fundraising event in the history of Phoebe.
• Approximately 1,200 lights were used to decorate the first 30-foot, Australian pine tree.
• Mrs. Sheila Harvin, of Enterprise, Ala., an oncology patient, was the first tree lighter.
• More than $16,800 was contributed at the first tree lighting ceremony.

Gloria Simpson | Phoebe Sumter Tree Lighter, 2023

Gloria Simpson just can’t stop working. “I’m always busy, and I love it.” She has “retired” a couple of times from jobs in human resources and customer service, but retirement just never seems to take.  These days, she works at The Sweet Spot, an Americus bakery owned by her daughter-in-law. “I cook the doughnuts and the doughnut holes.
