Maze Procedure

Atrial fibrillation (or "AF") is the most common form of irregular heart rhythm, affecting more than three million people nationally. The Maze surgical procedure, as practiced by the Phoebe Heart and Vascular Center surgeons, provides a very effective way to restore normal heart rhythm.

Abnormal heart rhythm -- or "arrhythmia" -- once thought to be harmless, is in fact a serious condition that greatly increases the risk of stroke. The most common form of arrhythmia, originating in the top of the heart, is called atrial fibrillation and causes a rapid and disorganized heartbeat.

Leading the way in advanced procedures; Phoebe was the first in many electrophysiology procedures:

  • First AICD implantation
  • First biventricular AICD implantation
  • First radiofrequency catheterablation of atrial flutter
  • First laser lead extraction of an AICD
  • First subcutaneous AICD
  • First cryoablation of atrial fibrillation
