Meet Cameron & Carson
Moms never imagine their newborn being sent to the NICU, but April is so thankful that her two boys were in the care of the medical team at Phoebe when they needed it most.
April was just 32 weeks pregnant when she went into labor with her first child. April was told that she might not be able to get pregnant, and if she did, there would likely be complications. After nearly 4 days at the hospital in labor, Cameron DeVonte Hughley was born May 8, 2007 weighing 4 pounds, 4 ounces. Because of his low birth weight and low oxygen levels, Cameron was immediately taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). April cried at the thought of being separated from Cameron, so she spent every single day and night in the NICU with her baby. Cameron’s oxygen levels climbed and he was doing well, so he was discharged from the hospital after almost a month in the NICU. Today, Cameron is a happy, healthy nine year old who loves football and wants to be a train engineer when he grows up.
Flash forward eight years, April found out she was pregnant with her second child. Carson Deonte Hughley was born 3 months early on Jan 7, 2016. Carson was even smaller than his brother Cameron at birth, weighing only 2 pounds, 12 ounces. It felt all too familiar to April as she told her baby goodbye after holding him for the first time so he could be sent to the NICU. Like Cameron, Carson had low oxygen levels and needed to be monitored and stable before he could go home. Carson had to stay on oxygen for three weeks before he was slowly weaned off and could breathe completely on his own. Carson was sent home after more than a month in the NICU, and has received great reports from his follow up appointments and therapy sessions.

The nurses and doctors have so much love and compassion for the babies, and they always answered my endless questions.” April is thankful for Children’s Miracle Network and the life-saving equipment, therapy, education, and training that it provided to help her sons become happy and healthy children!
